Effective Auditing of Construction Contract Change Orders

This webinar will address methodology for effectively auditing construction contract change orders.  The importance of  establishing effective change order contract language will be discussed along with recommended clauses that make change order pricing auditable.  

Examples of pre-approval and post-approval change order analysis techniques that resulted in significant cost-avoidance or cost recovery will be discussed. 

The following typical overcharges on change orders will be discussed:

  • labor and labor burden rates are overstated
  • estimated labor hours are inappropriately high due to improper use of labor productivity factors
  • improper charges for supervision labor that should be covered by change order markup
  • material prices are significantly in excess of actual market cost
  • overstated material quantities
  • improper charges for markups

Examples from our change order audit experiences will be used to illustrate the major learning points presented during this webinar.

Rich Townsend

Rich Townsend is CEO of the consulting firm R. L. Townsend & Associates, LLC., which provides construction audit and cost control consulting services for Owner organizations in the United States.

Mr. Townsend is a Certified Construction Auditor (CCA), a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He is a graduate of Waynesburg College (Waynesburg, Pennsylvania) where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in accounting.Rich Townsend is Co-Owner of the consulting firm R. L. Townsend & Associates, LLC., which provides construction audit and cost control consulting services for Owner organizations in the United States.

For over 20 years, Mr. Townsend has been providing professional development training for Owner auditors and Owner construction management representatives for a wide variety of organizations and industries throughout the United States and Canada.  His seminars entitled "Controlling Construction Costs"  and "Effective Auditing of Construction Activity have been presented in affiliation with Courtenay Thompson & Associates.
